Genetically Modified crops besiege Europe and enter Greece through the back door. According to district council resolutions, our country is supposedly free of crops coming from genetically modified seeds. But is it really like this?

 

Reportage without Frontiers traveled to Alexandroupoli and located farmers who cropped genetically modified corn seeds, which had been “sold” as conventional by the supplier-companies. Despite the fact that the problem has been ascertained and the destruction of the crop had been ordered, it is almost certain that a large quantity of the genetically modified corn wasn’t destroyed, and eventually reached the market under the form of nutriments for children, flours and various other products.

 

The struggle for the GMOs’ domination is, in fact, an underground war aiming to another kind of hegemony: hegemony through the control of nutrition, especially the nutrition of the poorest populations. “Every time that the Minister of Agriculture changes in Greece, the first one that visits him is the American ambassador and next comes a representative of Monsanto Corp., or the multinational enterprises that promote genetically modified products” says Mirto Pispini, a Greenpeace expert on GMO’s. One of the most indicating examples is the one in Cyprus, where the possibility of placing the GMO products on different shelves, almost provoked a "hot" incident with USA.

 

As the consumers’ anxiety, concerning the quality of their nutrition, is growing, recent researches prove the catastrophic impacts the consumption of GMO’s has on human health. “We have just completed a research in regions where genetically modified cotton is cultivated. The farmers that work with this cotton suffer from serious allergies. “Imagine what would happen to us, if we had to eat it”, Vandana Shiva, a world known atomic physicist and foe of GMO’s tells Stelios Kouloglou.

 

The quality of our nutrition is continuously aggravating. The yoghurts are not yoghurts anymore, the ice creams neither. The labels only speak half the truth

 

The biological products could possibly be a solution to our alimentation problem, if the quality tests and the certification process guaranteed their quality. Reportage Without Frontiers conducted analyses in order to ascertain if the biological products are “clean”.
