Greece: An Endless Disposal Centre

Reportage Without Frontiers, Thursday, June 19, at 22:00, on ET1

An endless crime redounds in Greece regarding the uncontrolled garbage throwing. There are disposal centers everywhere, near residential areas, within lakes, rivers, the sea, even within archeological sites. This image belongs to a country that lives in the Middle Ages as far as it concerns the garbage management.

Reportage Without Frontiers recorded Third World images in Attica, within which lies the biggest sanitary landfill in Europe. We visited Mornos, the lake that water supplies half the country and discovered that effluents and runoffs from the former disposal centre fall within it. We went to Livanates and faced the world?s novelty of a "private disposal centre" and made a tour in the archeological site of Strofilas, Andros, smelling the fragrance of... garbage.

According to EU legislation, in every borough there should be at least a sanitary landfill plus a recycling system. However, the NIMBY phenomenon (Not In My Back Yard)... seems to affect the local authorities and the residents of several regions, making impossible the solution to this complicated problem.

At the same time, the old "generation" of uncontrolled disposal centers has been replaced by new ones –and there are neither environmental studies nor any anticipation for the aggravation of people and nature. The Greek authorities tried to inveigle the EU, however the satellites recorded this shocking situation... This put Greece one step before a fine imposition...
